The Tim Kliphuis Trio revisit Mussorgsky’s masterpiece
In a welcome return to Inverurie, the Tim Kliphuis Trio will perform at the Acorn Centre on Saturday 16 November 2024 (7.30pm).
2024 sees the 150th anniversary of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which the Russian Romantic composed in honour of his friend, the artist Viktor Hartmann, who had died suddenly the previous year, aged only 39. Triumphantly premiered at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall on 10 March 2024, Tim Kliphuis and his Trio present a brand new Pictures at an Exhibition, showcasing the daring innovations of Musorgsky’s music through a unique and exciting lens. Original movements, Promenade, Baba Yaga, The Old Castle – and more – are ‘re-invented’ and, taking Musorgsky’s lead, Tim Kliphuis has composed new musical representations of famous paintings like Klimt’s The Kiss, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Hokusai’s Great Wave and O’Keeffe’s Ritz Tower.
Tickets for the concert cost £14 for non-subscribers and are free for under 25s in full-time education, and for those on disability or low-income benefits. These are available from TicketSource, at Novello Gifts (29 West High Street, Inverurie) or at the door.
The updated programme is as follows:
Baba Yaga – Hartmann
Starry Night – Van Gogh
Gnomus (The Gnome) – Hartmann
The Old Castle – Hartmann
Promenade-II
Bydlo – Hartmann
Great Wave – Hokusai
Promenade-III
The Kiss – Klimt
Ritz Tower – O’Keeffe
After the interval there will be a selection of Tim Kliphuis Trio favourites by Django Reinhardt, J.S. Bach, Kliphuis and others
On the day following the concert (Sunday 17 November), there will be an opportunity for players to join the trio for a day of individual coaching and a group workshop at King’s Pavilion, University of Aberdeen. Players of any instrument are welcome to participate in the workshop. More details about the day can be found here.
